Mayer Amschel Rothschild Family Tree
“Founder of the Rothschild Dynasty”
Biography
Overview
Mayer Amschel Rothschild (1744–1812) is widely regarded as the founding father of international high finance. From humble origins in Frankfurt's Judengasse, he rose to become the financial custodian for Landgrave Wilhelm IX of Hesse-Kassel, one of Europe's wealthiest rulers.
The Five Arrows
Recognizing the limitations of operating within a single German state, Mayer Amschel sent four of his five sons to key European capitals:
- Frankfurt: Amschel Mayer (eldest son)
- Vienna: Salomon Mayer
- London: Nathan Mayer
- Naples: Kalman (Carl) Mayer
- Paris: Jakob (James) Mayer
This network allowed the family to execute cross-border arbitrage, settle international bills of exchange, and fund sovereign loans at an unprecedented scale. Mayer Amschel was ranked #7 on Forbes magazine's list of the 'Twenty Most Influential Businessmen of All Time'.
