Nathan Mayer Rothschild, 1st Baron Rothschild (1840–1915), known as 'Natty', led N M Rothschild & Sons during the height of the British Empire. Under his direction, the bank financed Cecil Rhodes in founding De Beers and the British South Africa Company.
In 1885, Prime Minister William Gladstone raised him to the peerage as Baron Rothschild of Tring, making him the first practicing Jew to enter the British House of Lords.
