Gutle Schnapper Family Tree
“Matriarch of the House of Rothschild”
Biography
Biography
Gutle Schnapper (1753–1849) was the daughter of Wolf Salomon Schnapper, Court Factor to the Prince of Saxe-Meiningen. She married Mayer Amschel Rothschild in 1770 and brought a significant dowry that helped establish the firm.
She bore ten surviving children, including the five sons who created the international banking network. Gutle lived to the age of 95, remaining in the original modest green-shield house in the Frankfurt ghetto even after her sons became multi-millionaires, Austrian barons, and advisors to kings. She famously remarked: 'There will be no war; my sons will not provide the money.'
