Baron James Mayer de Rothschild (1792–1868) was the youngest of the five brothers. Dispatched to Paris in 1812, he founded de Rothschild Frères in 1817 and grew into one of the most powerful financial titans in French history.
He bankrolled the Bourbon Restoration, the July Monarchy, and the Second Empire. James constructed the Chemin de Fer du Nord railway network and financed mining and industrial ventures across France. In 1868, shortly before his death, he purchased the Premier Cru wine estate Château Lafite. His palace at Ferrières-en-Brie was described as the most magnificent private château in France.
