Baron Philippe de Rothschild Family Tree
“Visionary Winemaker of Château Mouton Rothschild”
Biography
Biography
Baron Philippe de Rothschild (1902–1988) was one of the most innovative figures in 20th-century viticulture. Taking over Château Mouton Rothschild at age twenty in 1922, he pioneered chateau-bottling (bottling wine on the estate rather than shipping in barrels to merchants).
In 1945, he initiated the world-famous Mouton artist labels, commissioning custom artwork from artists like Salvador Dalí, Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso, and Andy Warhol. In 1973, after a 51-year campaign, he accomplished the only reclassification of the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, elevating Mouton to Premier Grand Cru Classé ('Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change'). In 1979, he co-founded Opus One in Napa Valley with Robert Mondavi.
