“First Practicing Jewish Member of the British Parliament”
Biography
Biography
Lionel Nathan de Rothschild (1808–1879) took leadership of the London house after his father Nathan's death in 1836. He advanced millions to the British government during the Irish Famine and the Crimean War.
In 1875, Lionel financed Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli's emergency £4 million purchase of the Khedive of Egypt's shares in the Suez Canal, securing Britain's route to India. Elected MP for the City of London in 1847, he was barred from taking his seat for eleven years until the Parliamentary Oaths Act was reformed in 1858, allowing him to swear on the Hebrew Bible.
