Lionel Walter Rothschild, 2nd Baron Rothschild Family Tree
“Recipient of the Balfour Declaration & Famed Zoologist”
Biography
Biography
Walter Rothschild, 2nd Baron Rothschild (1868–1937) was one of history's most eccentric and accomplished naturalists. Rather than banking, he devoted his fortune to zoological collection, amassing over 2.25 million butterflies and 300,000 bird skins at his museum in Tring.
He famously drove a carriage harnessed to four zebras to Buckingham Palace. In November 1917, British Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour addressed the historic Balfour Declaration directly to Lord Rothschild: 'His Majesty's Government view with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people.'
